MAJOR, MAJOR PROBLEM; HOSTAGE CRISIS TRAGEDY

No doubt the “major, major problem” problem created by the tragic end of the hostage drama staged by one dismissed or disgruntled  police officer in Rizal Park,  Manila (inside a tourist bus) has put the Philippine Government in a shameful situation all over the world. Hong Kong has already advised its people not to visit the Philippines; now perceived as one of the most dangerous countries in the world for tourists.

Donald Tsang, Hong Kong’s Chief Executive has been disappointed and angered on the way the Philippine authorities handled the hostage crisis. Hong Kong authorities earlier appealed to the Philippine authorities to insure the safety of the hostages. That did not happened when negotiation stopped and when the hostage taker started to shoot the hostages after seeing his brother (a traffic cop) in the TV being arrested for mere suspision of involvement in the hostage taking. Ill equipped SWAT policemen stormed the bus and bombarded it with tear gas to flush out the gun man and to neutralize him. He was killed in the firefight and so with some 8 victims and a number of wounded. All are tourists coming to Manila for a vacation. Now HongKong is grieving, mad, and staging protests on the death and wounding of their nationals in Manila.

News circulated that Tsang had been calling by phone P.Noy on the day of the hostage taking but he was unavailable further aggravating the issue. P.Noy later called the CEO (Tsang) and met Hong Kong delegation who came to Manila to attend to the victims and survivors.

PNP admitted some mistakes in the hostage rescue operation but they there’s nothing to be shameful on what they did given the limited equipment and resources not to mention lacking in skills and other capabilities. There is also fear that some of those killed were not felled down by the gunman’s bullets but of the responding lawmen. Nevetheless a thorough investigation is going on.

This is a black-eye (is it?) to P.Noy’s administration. Philippine relations with Hong Kong and China may suffer for a while until such time this tragic even shall be forgotten and everything shall be patche up properly. Meanwhile our people (kababayan) in Hong Kong and China will bear all the outrage of the Chinese. Reports circulating in the web that many Filipino workers in Hong Kong were already dismissed by their Chinese employer.

Does this tragic hostage incident affect Philippine Tourism? Malacanang is proud to say not at all. Will other countries ban their citizens to come to the Philippines? Malacanang is proud to say not at all. P. Noy is still that popular (and acceptable?) all over the world for the Philippines to be affected with one isolated case. It is no terrorism at all.

Well, we just pray everything will gonna be alright! My Condolences to the family of the victims and my prayer for the immediate recovery of all those wounded tourists. From the bottom of my heart, Sorry, Sorry, Sorry.

Ala e, what went wrong kabayan?

Ala e kabayan, ba’t nagkagay-on.

  2. What a shame! I am planning to have a 3-day trip to HK this sem. break but like Erap I have no more interest to pursue it. Thanks to the PNP who acted like amateurs during their rescue operations. My condolences too to the family of the victims. P.Noy not seen nor heard during the hostage drama is to me, like what Tsang said, disgusting.

  3. In all seriousness, PNoy cannot afford to be “sali-saling pusa” on issues like these. Like in other countries, there are experts in these matters, it’s lamentable (again), that those supposed to be trained were either inept or simply forgot their training. Everyone seemed caught off-guard that the end result was deadly…..kaya most of those involved were pa easy-easy. Most hostage taking scenarios are always deadly. Hope they learned a hard lesson….and I never agreed with some bloggers/commenters that PNoy fire everyone. It’s not the solution. Give them second chance.

  4. Amen to that. Ang hindi lang magandang naririnig ko, and I heard also from Mer, may inggitan daw sa PNP kaya MPD lang na SWAT ang rumisponde at wala sa eksena ang NCRPO SWAT team. Does somebody want to get the credit alone?

More that the kakulangang sa gamit, PNoy should look at the values and attitude factors of our police officer. Is there a need to re-train them on values?

How is the mental health of our police officers, is there a need for psych-assessment if ever?
