Avoiding the “Monster”

In so far as President Arroyo is concerned,  the newly merged party Lakas-Kabalikat ng Malayang Pilipino-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-Kampi-CMD) “is finest weapon and perhaps our best guarantee for success in the 2010 elections.” It is also in this party that the next president of the Philippines will come according to the administration; which means that the fear for cha-cha and no election for 2010 will come to rest.

“I need you all strong and united. There is no other way forward than to be one, act as one, and win as one,” President Arroyo said during the official merger of the three political parties.

And further she said, “Doubting Thomases—and there were many—said that the merger between the two biggest political parties in the country would not come to pass. The road to this merger has neither been short nor easy. The road ahead is likely strewn with more challenges and trials but we have made a great leap of faith and statesmanship today.”

But Jose deVeneciaand former President Fidel Ramos, who both created Lakas-CMD party, did not attend the signing of the official merger of the three parties. MMDA Chairman Bayani Fernando, also a presidential aspirant and one of the loyal members of Lakas, did not attend the assembly. He was concerned on the new party’s possible endorsement of non-party members for the presidential bid like Vice President Noli de Castro and Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro.

The opposition look at the merger as something favorable to them. In effect it would create demoralization of members and possible break away to join other political parties. But this is a problem that the party had to work into. Former Surigao del Sur Rep. Prospero Pichay, a Lakas-CMD stalwart, advanced the idea of  a selection committee which will look into factors (such as a candidate’s survey ratings, etc.) as the basis for selectingthe best possible standard bearer with the strongest chance of winning the 2010 election.

But former House Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. predicted a collapse of the “formidable” party Lakas-Kabalikat ng Malayang Pilipino-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-Kampi-CMD) after the 2010 elections.

He said nia morning television show of the ABS-CBN :”Itong bagong partido na ito that President Ramos and I oppose, parang yan KBL (Kilusang Bagong Lipunan) ni [former president Ferdinand] Marcos ito. Naging monster and it collapsed after a few months, immediately after the [1986] elections ”

According to de Venecia signs of imminentcollapse of the new party would  were very visible during the formal signing of its merger last Thursday in Manila Hotel. “Maraming leaders ng CMD (Christiam Muslim Democrats) such as governors, congressmen, mayors ang hindi invited at nag-attend.”

Jose de Venecia and former President Ramos, who both created Lakas-CMD party, did not attend the formal merger as they would only be used as “rubber stamps.”

But in a system where money speaks, it would be difficult to measure and determine the depth of loyalty of members to the  values and principles that a party stands for. Each one has a political ambition to pursue. And to those who are in power now, survival is the name of the game.

Both former speaker Jose de Venecia and former president FidelRamos know this pretty well; not unless they are only having a sour grape in the meantime.

  1. KBL means Kilusang Bagong Lipunan. It could also mean Kakalas Ba ang Lahat.

Pero may natitira pa ring loyalista ni Apo at Madam. Kanino kaya sila kaKampi ngayon?

Si Apo Ferdie Jr. lang ang nakakaalam.

    Correction please, si madam daw.

    Wala nang chacha? Hehehehe

  2. Galit si Tabako sa kasalang nangyari.Hehehe!

  7. Kap,
Very soon the Congress will enact into law the Right of Reply bill. This will not only affect the journalists but thousands if not millions of bloggers and internet users in the Philippines. But how can you inforce such a law? How can a politician or anybody respond to all of those who have written something negative to them realistically. This sounds something “idiotic” to me. Congressman Abante should have better ideas than this.

  8. Kap may poste ako tungkol sa kalibogan ng tao para maiba naman ang ating topic. Tanong ko lang, talaga bang puro kapahamakan lang ang naidudulot ng kalibogan?
