Gloria-Obama Ties in “Freezer?” (Are you listening little girl?)

I don’t know what has a political analyst eaten to tell to the viewers of Umagang Kay Ganda that “President Arroyo’s administration should take seriously the recent US reports on corruption and the illegal drug trade in the Philippines to be able to thaw the ‘freezing’ diplomatic and political relations of the country with America.”

Is he saying that the Arroyo’s administration is already numbed on issues of corruption in the country? It is corruption which enabled the proliferation of drug trafficking in this country, smuggling, prostitution, and plunder of government funds; in similar manner that poverty and economic crisis in the country are also linked to corruption.

But what’s the purpose and business of the US under the Obama’s administration shouting these criticisms direct into the face of the gallant men and women of Malacanang about these issues?

Casiple said the relationship between the Philippines and the United States is turning cold probably because of US President Barack Obama’s earlier declaration against corrupt and deceitful governments.

Casiple said Mrs. Arroyo’s administration can still heal the weakening relations by “seriously” looking into corruption and the “immense” drug problem reported by the US Department of State instead of “shooting the messenger.”(From abs-cbnNEWS.com)

He said Obama’s advocacy of change is obviously not only meant for America, but also for other nations with close ties with the world’s most powerful country.

He said Obama was serious when he declared: “To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history…”

Late February the US State Department listed the Philippines as one of the “countries with serious money laundering problems because of the illegal drug trade.” The same agency also released a report that there is a widespread corruption in the Philippine Judiciary.

Recently the Senate conducted a hearing on the report submitted by The World Bank to the Office of the Ombudsman regarding corruption “in the biddings of its road projects in the country.”

“A copy of the purported WB report, which was leaked to the media, included the name of Mrs. Arroyo’s husband, Jose Miguel “Mike” Arroyo.”

But, as reported, some quarters close to Malacanang link these damaging reports against the Arroyo’s administration on the on-going review as the Visiting Forces Agreement and its possible abrogation by the Senate. Casiple however could not buy such reasoning. Long before this VFA review issue resurfaced, reports of corruption and money laundering issues are already circulating and evaluated by the US State Department.

So it’s up to the Arroyo’s administration to make the right move, act seriously on the corruption issues rather than evading it. This may perhaps involve giving a blanket authority to Ombudsman Mercedita Guttierrez to file plunder and corruption cases to all those involved in Fertilizer scam, ZTE broadband scam, World Bank’s bid rigging report on road projects, etc. Perhaps if this would be realized, US-Philippine ties will be warmer than ever.

And to paraphrase Anthony Taverna’s statement, “Are you listening little girl?”

  1. Casiple is dead wrong. There is nothing wrong with Pinas and US relations. The wrong lies alone with Gloria being “on the wrong side of history”. Hindi yan country to country kundi personal ng pekeng pangulo.

How would Gloria act “seriously” to curtail corruption in the government when it is herself who is DOING it tirelessly.

Unless Barack changes his mind (again), Gloria Arroyo is already a goner in Barack’s dictionary.

  2. Korrekt tita. Walang masamang tinapay sa US kung ang pinag-uusapan ay RP-US relations. Si madam president Gloria lang ang inaayawan ni Obama because of the issues of corruption and human rights abuses.
Obama intends to fight terror in a positive way. Remove all the obstacles to progress, free people from poverty, open the line of communication, resolve political issues and differences diplomatically and you will see the world exists in the universe peacefully.

  3. Sabi ni tita chi, “goner.” Ako naman, “history,” hehehe.

  4. America is fed up with the Arroyo’s administration. Politicians supporting the president should reconsider their options now on party affiliation, whether they will be on the side of the opposition or the president. The probability of losing under the banner of the Lakas Party and Kampi is great. The people too are fed up with all the unresolved issues of graft and corruption in the country.

Politics pala itong pinaguusapan ninyo.

  7. Carmina,
Hindi sex and issue dito, governance.

The higher you go, the more abuses you make kapag “bumagsak ay malakas ang lagapak.”

All we can do is observe.
There are rewarding points also if ever this may happen. And this is just an opinion.

  12. No more corruption in the Philippines, iyan ang sabi ng mga nasa administrasyon.
