Pacquiao and the Politicians Around Him.

No doubt Pacquio is revered as the number boxer in the Philippines today, if not the world. The military stops its offensive against the rebels just to watch the “Dream Match” between Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao and Oscar “Golden Boy” dela Hoya (fondly tagged by my daughter as “Golden Koi, or Goldfish” because of his popping eye). Pacquiao won the match (or mismatch) with the entire Filipinos all over the world shouting in jubilation. Almost zero crime rate during the fight according to the Police.

Earlier a politician asked the Games and Amusement Board to temporarily suspend his license so he could not face dela Hoya in a match that would only bring him shame. But Pacman humbled the politician with his very convincing victory over the Golden Boy. Even if Congressman Rufus Rodriquez finally “ate humble pie” and rejoiced with millions of Filipinos, an irate Pacman had already advised him not to comment anything about boxing if he doesn’t know the rules. Pacman said in a television interview that he “knows all the rules about boxing” that he should not be advised by anyone on the wisdom of his decision especially if they are not familiar with the rules.

But this is politics. The Pacman should know pretty well that his victory will be used to cover up for a while some sour issues against this administration. As one reporter said, “upang makahinga ng maluwag pansamantala (can take a breath for a while freely). As a reward for bringing fame to his country, Sen. Juan Miguel Zubiri filed a resolution in Senate to declare/commend Manny Pacquiao as the ‘Greatest Filipino Boxer of Our Time’. If it will prosper, the resolution will serve as the Senate’s gift to the Pacman for defeating the 10-time world boxing champion Oscar dela Hoya.

But one Sports analyst however perceived the fight and victory as a shallow one. Oscar dela Hoya did not enter the ring to win but lose unlike Manny Pacquiao who was really prepared and determined to win. The Oscar dela Hoya who fought the Pacman in the ring was not same “Golden Boy dela Hoya who had been one of the best fighters during his time. But some sports analyst countered such allegation that the Golden Boy “dived the fight” as “plain rubbish.” And it’s unfair for both fighters who gave all their best in that match. Before the bell could ring for the 9th round, dela Hoya was seen as walking towards Manny Pacquiao to congratulate him.

It is no longer a secret that the boxer is surrounded by many politicians who want to ride on fame and popularity. As a matter of advice senator Zubiri, although he does not oppose Pacquiao’s plans to enter politics, asked the boxer to be careful with certain people who wanted to use him for their personal interests. According to Zubiri Pacquiao would “financially” attract certain personalities knowing he has plenty of money.

On her part president Arroyo considered Manny Pacquiao as a modern-day hero win or lost for he had won the hearts of the Filipinos. Probably it’s on similar reason that senator Zubiri suggested to President Arroyo to appoint the Pacman as a “peace envoy to Mindanao.” The senator is the belief that the Filipino boxing champion could convince Moro rebels to surrender their arms since he is an idol to Filipino Muslims and Christians alike. But one has to understand the complexity of this armed conflict in Mindanao which can not be resolved by once boxing popularity and limited experience in the military being a master sergeant of the army reserved command. He can technically knock out the Golden Boy in a “Dream Match” but not this aging problem of rebellion in Mindanao.
I agree the Pacman has the ambition to serve his country as a politician, probably that could come later, but not now when his boxing career is moving upward. I am one of those millions who call on the politicians not to coax the boxing champion into politics for their own advantage. Leave Manny Pacquiao alone. As Banong said, “pustahan tayo kapag laos na si Manny Pacquiao hindi na ninyo siya kilala (I bet if he is no longer a champion you don’t know Pacquiao anymore).”

Sori not to join the pagsasaya to high heavens sa pagkapanalo ni Pakyaw, but I reject any persons sleeping with Gloria and the Pidal gang.

  4. Excerpts from Conrado de Quiros column @Inquirer:

Pacquiao has brought honor to his country. Ms Arroyo has brought shame to her country. Pacquiao is adored by his countrymen, even when he sings karaoke. Ms Arroyo is reviled by her countrymen, even when she tries to sing a different tune. Each time Pacquiao comes home, he is treated like a conquering hero. Each time Ms Arroyo comes home, she is treated like an uncontainable plague. Wherever Pacquiao goes, he is mobbed by adoring fans, eager to touch him. Wherever Ms Arroyo goes, she is met by an angry mob, eager to lynch her. Pacquiao has united his countrymen by giving them to see the best that they can be. Ms Arroyo has divided her countrymen by giving them to see the worst that they can be.

  5. If Pakyaw could tell his amuyongs to disappear for the love of country, only then I could say he’s the man.

But of course, Pakyaw does not even have the common sense to do that and realize that he could do better than partying with the Pidal mafia.

  9. Joc-joc now is untouchable. Nakakainis!

  10. The Supreme Court is just being true as Gloria’s puppet.

    haaaysh!

  12. i’m a fan of pacman when it comes to boxing but if he enters politics, i’ll have to pass.

he may have the best intentions in helping others unfortunately he is being (mis)guided by self-serving politicians.

    it was an eyesore.

    it was an eyesore.

Well, at least ay masaya siya that dirty politicians using him fight for his company.

  16. Kapitan K

  18. Dalawang umaatikabong napili kong kantyaw ng Professional Heckler:

Sports analysts say Manny Pacquiao continue to validate his status as the world’s top pound-for-pound fighter. When Vice President De Castro heard this, he said, “Teka, Pilipino siya, hindi British. Dapat peso-for-peso fighter!”

After the bout, deputy national security adviser Luis “Chavit” Singson did not climb into the ring as he did during Manny’s previous fights. His conspicuous absence fueled rumors he actually placed a huge bet on Oscar De La Hoya.

  19. Kuya Joe,
Natumbok mo. Paporma lang itong si Kabayan, hehehe. Siya nga pala naglibot ang Motorcade ni Pacman sa buong Kamaynilaan from Quezon City to Manila, etc. Guess kung sino ang kasama? Korek kayo diyan, si Lito Atienza, hehehe.
Bilang ganti nagbigay siya ng 100,000 pesos para madagdagan ang pondo for the Philippine Eagle Conservation.

  20. Another name for the Pacman, Matang Aguila sa Kuko ng mga Pulitiko, hehehe.

  22. Pacman, Matang Aguila sa Kuko ng mga Pulitiko

    Brilliant, segundina.

  23. Mayroon po akong bagong ipinoste ngayon– The Filipino value of hiya and charter change ang tema.

  26. Napanood ba ninyo si Aling Juana in the centerstage? Ganito raw how to dance the cha-cha: http://www.inquirer.net/vdo/player.php?vid=2035
