Who doesn’t want peace. But it should be a kind of peace achieved without dismembering our national territory. But this is not what the pro MOA-AD  have in mind. They just don’t care what the majority of the Filipinos say.

Francis Escudero, Sen. Aquilino Pimentel Jr., former president Joseph Estrada, UNO spokesman Adel Tamano, Sen. Manuel Roxas II, and Makati City Rep.

Tama ba sila?

NGO members slam pols for stopping MOA-AD signing

Members of Bangsamoro People Solidarity for Peace (BPSP) belonging to civil society, religious, youth and women’s sectors have come together to condemn the suspension of the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement on Ancestral Domain (MOA-AD) between the Philippine government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

They said the MOA could have been a step forward in achieving lasting peace and genuine economic development in Mindanao.

They condemned the intervention of North Cotabato Vice-Gov. Emmanuel Piñol and Zambaonga City Mayor Celso Lobregat which resulted to the issuance of a temporary restraining order (TRO) by the Supreme Court against the MOA-AD signing.

The MOA was supposed to be signed in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia last August 5, 2008.

Kami ang inagawan ng lupa!” said the group.

They also criticized other politicians who opposed the MOA particularly members of the political opposition such as United Opposition leader Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay, Sen. Francis Escudero, Sen. Aquilino Pimentel Jr., former president Joseph Estrada, UNO spokesman Adel Tamano, Sen. Manuel Roxas II, and Makati City Rep. Teodoro Locsin.

The group said these politicians have never experienced war and do not how it feels to be in constant pain due to violence, conflict and poverty such as what the Bangsamoro people are going through.

They even added that these politicians are just using this issue to get media mileage to benefit their political ambitions. Escudero, Estrada, Tamano and Roxas are rumored to be running for Presidentr in 2010.

“Sino sila? Nandiyan lang sila sa kanilang mga opisina. Ginagamit lang nila ito para maging popular, kasi gusto nilang tumakbo bilang presidente!” said members of the group.

They also answered criticisms that the MOA signing could potentially result in the extension of President Arroyo’s stay in office beyond 2010. They said they support Mrs. Arroyo’s initiative to give peace in Mindanao but they expressed they would oppose any amendment in the Constitution that will make her extend her term.

They also made it clear that the MOA signing is just the beginning, after this, they still have to craft a Comprehensive Pact which will be forwarded to Congress and then submitted to the people for plebiscite.

Members of the BPSP who slammed the suspension of the MOA signing include Norhaiya Macusang (representing women’s group), Imam Abdul Basit Marangit (religious), Ustadz Ayob Khan (religious), Pendatun Disimban (civil society) and Amina Ubrahim (youth).

  6. Quoted from the Tribune Editorial, Aug. 9

The occupation by the Moro Islamic Liberation Front of at least nine villages in five towns of North Cotabato, is already indicative of just what the MILF forces will be doing in Mindanao and even Palawan once they are granted their demands on the ancestral domain pact by the Arroyo government. The MILF, no doubt about it, is going to occupy the whole of Mindanao, given a few more years and and even bigger MILF army, airforce and navy.

The fact alone that the memorandum of agreement (MoA) pinpoints scattered barangays and towns as part of the MILF’s ancestral domain, rather than provinces, as it was in the past with the establishment of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, makes it a lot easier for the MILF forces to invade other parts of Mindanao and annex these to its independent Islamic state.

  7. Look at this report from the Manila Standard:

..The North Cotabato vice governor said he and other local government officials would not have discovered the inclusion of their barangays in the Bangsamoro Juridical Entity if not for Esperon.

The vice governor revealed that it was Esperon who leaked an “unofficial copy” of the final draft agreement which led to this discovery, and eventually drove him to question the agreement on the ancestral domain before the Supreme Court.

The high court issued a temporary restraining order stopping the government from signing a memorandum of agreement with the rebel group.

The vice governor disclosed it was Esperon who gave him an unofficial copy of the proposed GRP-MILF draft, and even told him that it should be kept a secret.

  8. Another interesting article is this excerpts from Herman Tiu’s column at Daily Tribune:

And here in today’s Mindanao, the MILF’s US, British and Malaysian allies are similarly backing this otherwise toothless group. True enough, when the MILF land grab was deferred by the Supreme Court TRO, US Ambassador Kristie Kenney quickly expressed deep disappointment.

“It’s disappointing but not something you can’t continue to work through,” said Kenney on the heels of the aborted agreement-signing that would have granted a separate state to the MILF. Why is the US Embassy interfering in the country’s internal affairs, particularly in this highly charged separation of part of the nation’s territory? Indeed, the American ambassador has only proven that she doesn’t have any qualms in showing her office’s true intent in praising the most unpopular economic policies of Gloria like the rVAT and now, the sellout of Mindanao territories. Thus, US intentions are now exposed for what they are — subversion to exploit and gain control of parts of Mindanao to loot our national patrimony.

  9. From Tony Lopez column at the Manila Times:

The bad news is that the Bangsamoro homeland might just allow the stationing of nuclear weapons in the Philippines.

Not only that, with Bangsamoro, American troops could be stationed in key parts of Mindanao. Is this the reason why the US ambassador was in Kuala Lumpur the signing of the MOA on ancestral domain?

Ito’y opinyon ko lang, hindi naga-akusa and I stand or sitting down corrected, hehehehe.

  11. Kapitan Kidlat,

Hehehe!

  14. This piece of news came from Iligan City:

While we all unanimously agree that the issue should never be about being Christians nor Muslims or whoever dominates any areas covered in the document, we also unanimously disagree with the inclusion of the 8 barangays that will be TAKEN AWAY from Iligan.

Not only there was no consultation conducted, the 8 barangays, little as it maybe as the city have 44 barangays, little as it maybe with 90,000 population that will be affected, 82 % of the city’s total land will be LITERALLY TAKEN AWAY from the city.

Sino ba ang hindi magagalit nyan?

  15. The thought that President Gloria claims to be from iligan and with Prof. Rudy Rodil from MSU – IIT in the Peace Panel, we all felt betrayed that we were all unaware that 82 % of the city will be given away like a sell – out in the guise of ancestral domain as the solution to the peace process between the Government and the MILF.

Close to 20,000 ILiganons walked through the city’s main throughfares yesterday to show its opposition.

“We believe in ONE GOD, we live in ONE CITY, we are ONE PEOPLE and we belong to ONE COUNTRY, Madame President, kung mahal mo ang ILigan, please dont divide us!” said S. Ma. Yolanda C. Reyes, RVM

  16. The national government wants peace for Mindanao. It entered into a questionable agreement with the ‘moro islamic liberation front’ without consulting the affected people. What is the result of the said initialled MOA? Below are samples of the sentiments of the people taken from the http://www.cotabatoprovince:

we need some1 to supply us wid guns.. we already have warriors here! khit bata gusto lumaban.. sumusobra na kc…its about time to show them who we really are.. we maybe educated but we can be more illiterate than them… tingnan natin kung sinong matigas? hindi kau marunong lumaban ng harapan… HOPE IS A VERY DANGEROUS THING TO LOSE!!! wag tau mawalan ng pag asa..god is on our side

  17. More comments as I copy verbatim:

“I am calling the attention of all the residence in the province of cotabato to encourage everyone NOT TO PAY OUR TAXES.”

    asan kna gov???

    Let’s go to WAR!!!

AFP you are being paid by the PEOPLE who are paying their taxes, not by this MILF who were the extorionists, terrorist, cattle rastlers, rapist, ruthless. “MAHIYA NAMAN KAYO SA AMIN.”
VGov why should we will not shot this traitors (Dureza, Esperon, Arroyo and cohorts) aback. “NAKAKAHIYA SILA”.

  18. ONLY DEATH CAN SEPARATE US FROM OUR HOMELAND

When she took and assumed the office of the President of the Philippines, President Gloria M Arroyo Swear an Oath of Allegeance to uphold and defend the Constitution of the Republic of the Philippines. And that goes with
Hermogenes Esperon as well. What exactly are they doing now? They are totally disregarding the Constitution and treating it like a piece of trash. THIS IS HIGH TREASON.
Question? Is there something the MILF knows that we don’t which made her agree to their demand? I WONDER

  19. Now I know why AFP will not help our people in the province of Cotabato, becuase at this point in time, our government is the one supplying ammo for MILF to sustain in war for how many days. Helicopters are roaming around and drop supplies to MILF. This info is according to very realible source from higher ups. It is our government who financed this atrocities to pressure the people to say yes for ancestral domain agreement

I am calling the attention of all the residence in the province of cotabato to encourage everyone NOT TO PAY OUR TAXES. We have nothing to expect from our government, instead, we will contribute monthly to raise funding so we can buy guns and ammunition to fight, depend and secure our territory- province of Cotabato. We will fight against the government and we will demand to scrap all elected government officials from President down to congress. Wala moy pulos, papugi lang mo permamente.

Note: Those are words from the affected people in Mindanao, not ours, as they signified their outrage. There are more, until here muna.

And here’s what happened just yesterday. Hindi malayong mangyari sa atin ang ganito:

(Newser) – Eight people were killed today in a dozen suicide bomb attacks on government buildings by Muslim separatists in China’s restive western Xinjiang province, Reuters reports. The homemade grenade attacks and police shootout rocked the small village of Kuga, some 2,000 miles from Beijing, at dawn. Almost all of the victims were believed to be bombers.
